Lace Shorts - Inspired by Sincerely Jules (Blogger)

I’ve been inspired by the styles of blogger Jules from http://www.sincerelyjules.com/. I fell in love with an olive green and black lace skirt outfit that she had on and decided I needed to whip up something similar (see above image).

Using some non-stretch lace I had at home, I bought a gold zip and some stretch poplin for the lining. I’m so used to putting in invisible zips that I had a lot of trouble putting in this standard zipper (a bit of unpicking involved and a couple of you tube videos got me through).

I cut out size 6 but it was a little too small around the hips so I just reduced the 1.5cm seem allowance to 1cm.

The pattern didn’t have lining but due to the sheerness of the lace I had to put some in. I used cotton because I find that standard lining in summer is too hot and sweaty in Australia and cotton is much more comfortable.

It’s a really simple pattern and if made without the lining would only take 4 hours to make.

The Estate of the late Alina Galasso – Auction this Sunday 3rd July 2011

A friend of mines auction house, Theodore Bruce, has been entrusted with the giant task of auctioning the exquisite contents of one of Strathfields finest federation residences at 72 Redmyre Road Strathfield, Sydney on Sunday 3rd July 2011.

Belonging to the late Alina Galasso – model, restaurateur and local fashion icon, the collection includes imported hand crafted Italian furniture including Vitrine, Sideboards, Sofas, Beds, Tables and Chairs. Fine Antiques including Victorian Rosewood Games Table, Georgian Chest of Drawers, Artworks by Lindsay, Anna Corsini, McDougal, Bronzes and Sculptures, rugs and fabrics.

The proceeds of the auction will help fund The Alina Galasso Trust which will provide three anual Scholarships to encourage and support students to achieve thier best whilst studying fashion and costume.

Simplicity "Project Runway" Mini Dress

I fell in love with the cotton Brocade before I decided what I could make with it. It's been sitting a home for a while so thought I'd pair it with some black linen to make a mini dress.

This mini dress was made from Simplicity pattern 3507 from the "inspired by Project Runway" collection. I used a black linen for the bodice and facing and then used cotton brocade? style fabric for the main section of the dress. I used the brocade scalloped edge as the hem. To do this:
1) I measured the exact length I wanted the dress before cutting
2) Lined up the paper pattern for the skirt part of the dress so that the hem would be sitting on the scallops.

This dress does not have lining.

I cut out size 7/8, but it ended up being a bit big. I’d recommend tissue fitting the pattern first before cutting to ensure a good fit.

I’m planning on wearing the dress as a tunic in winter over the top of a turtle neck and as a dress in summer.

Handmade Leather Jacket... by me!

My leather jacket is finally finished after months of pattern making, adjusting, cutting, sewing and finishing.

It’s been a great adventure. Leather is beautiful to work with… a nice change from the slippery slide sewing of silk or nylon. Leather stays put and doesn’t require the finer finishes of softer or sheer fabrics.

I used a combination of patterns for this design. Starting with inspiration from this Muubaa waterfall jacket mink. I then used McCall’s pattern M5937 to give me a basic shape. I incorporated a block pattern I’ve made previously to give me a close fitting sleeve and made many adjustments on the dummy to get the lines I wanted. It’s lined in a matching colour and facing was done in the same leather as the front.

Leather was sourced from NSW leather Co. and I needed about 5 skins to complete the jacket, costing about $120 AUD.

I think I’d change the collar if I re-made it, but for the moment I’m content with wearing it the way that it’s turned out.

Hitting the secondhand clothing market circuit is one of my favourite pastimes. It’s so much fun! The thrill of fossicking through trash to find treasure, haggling for bargains and coming home with bags of goodies for a small amount of money. It’s definitely the most economical way to shop and you can usually find unique pieces from High Street designers.

One of my favourite markets is the Kirribilli Fashion Market, which I visited last Sunday. With $150 in my pocket I was on a mission to find shoes, party clothes and some winter pieces. The day did not disappoint! For $115 I bought 10 pieces including shoes, tops, accessories and a skirt. I’m already planning my shopping list for next month….!

My Green Thumb - Making a Terrarium

My terrarium - I would have like a vessel with a glass lid but this glass vase was only $10 and the one with a lid was $80.

Steps for making a terrarium (see below for full instructions). I found the chopstick rather helpful to create small holes in the soil to poke plants in.

Apartment living is not the best for the avid gardener, especially when your balcony is the size of a pea (like mine!). Hence, I’m always looking for ideas to improve the greenery around my house without sacrificing space. I’ve fallen in love with the concept of terrariums, little mini plant worlds that can live inside a glass jar, as a way to expand the garden at home. Today I finally had a go at creating one and I was pretty happy with the end result. I’ll post another photo when the succulents have settled in and they start to take a natural shape.

It was really simple to make:

Buy a glass jar/vase/vessel

Buy a selection of dwarf succulents

Put down a layer of horticulture charcoal

Then put some succulent/cactus potting mix on top (it’s more sandy than the normal potting mix)

Break up the succulents and start designing your landscape!

Water you terrarium….. presto! Fingers crossed it grows.

Nanna Craft

It’s not often that both sets of grandparents’ are still alive and completely, “with-it” when you turn 29 (one set in their late 70’s and the other side 91!). I'm lucky enough to be in that situation and this weekend I spent time with with my mum's parents, Nan & Pop.

For as long as I can remember both of them have been making things with their hands. Growing up and living on farms conditioned them to be very resourceful and these skills have definitely stuck with them as they’ve aged. They both cook up a mean country meal with cakes baked using my great-grandparent’s recipes’ and pop is a natural craftsman with wood-turning.

Nan has been into needlecraft since before my mum was born. My school holidays were spent at their home with Nan teaching me an assortment of handcrafts - candlewicking, shadow embroidery, patchwork and dress making .I’m sure all were taught to keep me occupied and give her a little peace and quiet!

Yesterday, Nan showed me her current patchworking project, an origami patchwork wall hanging from, “Flower Origami” by Kumiko Sudo.

I fell in love with the perfectly folded fabric flowers and the contents from the Flower Origami book. It got me thinking about other applications for these little folded fabric flowers. Stitched together they’d make a beautiful cushion cover or add a pocket and it could be a purse. You could even string them together to make a garland decoration – possibilities are endless!

Nan was horrified when I told her I’d put these pictures on the blog but I think her skill is something to share – what do you think?

To work out the colour combinations for my winter wardrobe, I’ve continued the colour mood board idea. This time, I looked at colours grey and camel and nominated seven matching colours that worked with each (and would suit my colouring).

Grey has been paired with denim blue, dark faun, black, ivory, khaki green, blush pink and mustard yellow.

Camel has been paired with black & white stripes, cream, olive green, burgundy, warm grey and denim blue.

Now that the colour boards are complete, I’ve decided to ONLY buy & make clothing items that match the following colours:

• Denim blue
• Khaki Green
• Burgundy
• Black (or black+white)
• Ivory
• Dark faun
• Blush pink
• Camel
• Grey
• Mustard yellow

This should result in a very functional winter wardrobe with lots of interchangeable outfits!

Chanel inspired tunic

I have a confession – I’ve jumped the gun with creating my winter wardrobe by purchasing fabric before I’ve finished designing! I knew it was going to end in $$ added to my credit card the moment I entered Tessuti's but the yummy Missoni fabrics and Fendi linings were too tempting to walk past (especially with a SALE sign out the front!)

I had decided on the colours for my winter wardrobe, which helped me show a little restraint when choosing fabrics. I was able to cull my selection from 10 different wools, jerseys, cotton blends to 5 different types of fabric (are you proud of me Cade?)

I want to make a tunic for work, so the boucle (I think that’s the right word? Can anyone confirm what it’s called?) fabric in khaki’s, pink, brown etc. looked perfect. So hence, the drawing above of my Chanel inspired dress!

Vogue had a pattern sale on last week so I stocked up on 10 new designs. I bought pattern V8146 for the work tunic. I’m still undecided on whether I should make the matching jacket? What do you think? Is it too much for someone aged under 35?

French = Style

I was in Paris early October 2010 and while sitting ‘alfresco’ in the heart of the Maris I started doodling the fashion and style that was walking by (hmmm, actually, the word ‘doodle’ and ‘Paris’ should not be in the same sentence, maybe sketch would be a better word??)

Anyway, I re-discovered this ‘sketch’ today and I took the following inspiration for my winter clothes:

* Always wear a scarf

* Buy a chic umbrella (dodging puddles with a newspaper over your head is a total no, no)

* A tailored, cropped jacket works with most things

* Tights! (Note-to-self: stick at the gym)

* Tan ankle boots – winter staple

* Funky glasses will always make you look uber arty (think Johnny Depp)

* Stripe tops should be a mandatory

* Find THE perfect white shirt ASAP

* Update my ballet flats

* Can’t go wrong with grey, red, tan and black

After trawling through images and magazines, I’ve started to refine what I want in my winter wardrobe. I’ve set a goal to make about 30% of items for my wardrobe and have them completed by the end of May! You, as my audience, can have front row seats as I sweat through each stage of the creative process!

I’m only in phase 1 (research), however please feel free to critique / comment along the way.

I’m in the process of reviewing colour combinations for my winter wardrobe. I’ve decided to pair mustard yellow with indigo blue (denim), dark faun, black, cream, warm brown (copper?) burgundy (red wine) and warm grey.

I’ve also started reviewing patterns for a pleated pant and a front tie blouse based on some images I found at Hypeed. At the moment I like the Burda Style Marilyn Trouser #6065 and the McCall’s Misses blouse M5884, however both will need a bit of editing.

Next colour review will be camel…..

Winter Wardrobe

I know it’s insane to be thinking about a winter wardrobe in 40+ degree C heat but that’s exactly what I did this weekend. I want to sew a few key pieces for my wardrobe this year, and given my track record, I need to start months in advance to get anything finished in time!

Working from my feet up I’ve started a mood board to decided what colours and styles I’ll work with this season.

Lula magazine always inspires me so that’s where I started….

Strawberry Fields

After months of tendering to my strawberry plants I am finally reaping the first fruit of my labour. Creating this first little plump strawberry was no easy feat for my plants. They have come back from the brink of death too many times to count on one hand. They’ve been starved of water, hit by huge wind gusts and battled against the resident bugs that call their pot home. So a big CONGRATULATIONS goes to my little strawberry plants and well wishes for the many more (hopefully) little plump strawberries that will pop out over the coming weeks!

While Miss Be Designs may be unknown to many of you, it is currently my favourite accessory brand and it’s sole creator Wendy Rattray (AKA Miss Be) is the talented minx behind all the wonderful creations.

I met Miss Be last week and I’m in total admiration of her journey thus far. From humble bean counter to a shining new design talent in under a year, Miss Be is on the road to major success.

Originally from a small town in the North East part of Scotland, Miss Be moved to Australia 8 years ago. She’d visited Australia the year before and fell in love with our way of life.

Not long after returning to Scotland a transfer opportunity came up with her company so she packed her bags and moved to Sydney. Arriving mid week around lunchtime she was shocked by the number of Aussies who were drunk and disorderly in pubs all around Sydney. She’d heard how much Aussies liked to drink but didn’t realise it included weekdays – little did she know it was Australia Day!

Making jewellery was a hobby Miss Be started back in Scotland. Always the creative, she’d dabbled in painting and silver work but fell in love with resin. “I love how resin can capture time in a new contemporary piece”.

Starting with object art, Miss Be quickly moved into making resin jewellery pieces. Spending time on her hobby after work and on weekends, she refined her techniques. “Resin is a very manual medium to work with. It takes a lot of practice to finish without any imperfections. It’s affected by so many things like temperature, time of day, time of year…”.

Feeling frustrated and bored in her accounting job, she found herself moving between companies trying to find happiness. “It took a long time before I realised it wasn’t the job it was me.” Wanting to break free into something more creative, a chance visit to a jewellery store in Paddington started the ball rolling. “The owner commented on the jewellery I was wearing and wanted to know who made the designs. It was the first time I thought I could make a business out of my hobby.”

Knowing that it would be too hard to work full time and try and establish her own brand, she resigned from her job, converted her second bedroom into a studio and created “Miss Be Designs”. Miss Be Designs is a brand about “moving away from fashion fads to being who you want to be…having independence...a brand for the nonconformist who dares to be bold”.

Combining resin with man-made and natural objects such as clocks, leaves, fabric, and feathers, Miss Be collections preserve a moment in time and create a unique, wearable piece of art. “Just because a bird no longer exists doesn’t mean its feather can't live in a different form”.

Now 8 months on, Miss Be is busy in her studio handcrafting ten pieces of jewellery a day. Even with years of experience “the end result is still unpredictable…it’s a nice surprise when the mould comes off and the final product takes form.”

Despite demand for her work growing, Miss Be is 100% committed to keeping all her pieces individually handcrafted. “It would be easy to follow suit and bow to the pressure of moving to mass production to get costs down and increase margins, but I want to keep my work unique, special and made with love.”

This year, Miss Be hopes to produce a new collection every couple of months and she’s currently working on a range that will “…capture the seasons through flowers and colours.”

Miss Be designs can be found in retail stores in Sydney and Melbourne and the “Time” and “Nature” range is part of an exhibition at Painters' Gallery in Mona Vale NSW Australia. Miss Be has also exhibited at markets like The Finders Keepers and she has an online etsy store. Miss Be encourages anyone interested in her work to join her Facebook Fan Page to keep up to date with new collections, outlets and news.

I've owned my Miss Be “Australian pheasant square ring” for about a month and it's barely come off my finger! I can’t wait to add another Miss Be design to my accessory collection!

Australian Artist – Rachel Carroll

I visited an exhibition at Painters' Gallery over the weekend and fell in love with the Australian bird studies by artist, Rachel Carroll. I bought three of her original hand-painted cards (see above) featuring a Manly Fairy-Wren, Kookaburra and a Rainbow Lorikeet. Such talent! I want to frame and hang them as a triplet series in the entrance to our house. Aren't they beautiful - if you click the image it should enlarge so you can see the detail!

The Painters' Gallery exhibition will continue until Saturday 5^th February, 2011 and more information about Rachel Carroll can be found on her website.

My Bryon Bay Shorts

I’m on holidays in the beautiful Byron Bay and ripped denim shorts are almost mandatory for anyone visiting. I’ve been trying to hunt down a pair but with a cost of $100 - $545 I thought it was worth trying to make my own.

I found a pair of shorts for $4 at the local thrift store. Using a seam ripper/unpicker I frayed the pockets on the back and then I cut them off to the correct length using my favourite shorts as a template. The length was short enough so that the bottom of the front pockets could be seen poking out. Then I frayed the bottom edges and put a couple of frays under the front pockets. I found this video on you tube that might help anyone wanting to DIY.

Christmas Eve, Eve

All the presents are now wrapped and sitting pretty under the tree. I always forget how much time you need to allow to wrap all the presents and how many roles of tape you go through! The above style was achieved by combining the elements I've blogged about over the last few weeks. The paper ribbon was made using left over paper from the paper stars and I used twine to tie the clay name tags.
I'm signing off for the Christmas period so I'd like to wish everyone a very happy and relaxing Christmas. Eat lots, be merry and I look forward to catching up in 2011!!

Christmas cards and gift tags

I’m always running late with Christmas cards and this year is no different! I started making them today and I really wanted to use up the bits and pieces left over in my craft tin. The cards I’ve made so far have been created from origami paper, scrapbooking tacks, cotton thread and buttons.

I also wanted some name tags / Christmas tree decorations so I cut out these star name tags out of oven bake molding clay and stamped the initials of family members to personalise.

All wrapped up

I love the raw look of recycled brown paper for wrapping up Christmas presents. I thought I should try and jazz it up a little this year with some stenciling using some plastic lace from Spotlight (I bought 1 metre that cost be about $5) and a can of white spray paint from Bunnings (about $4)

It was as simple as 1,2,3….
1) lay the lace on top of the brown paper
2) spray the paint in long strokes over the lace (using it as a stencil)
3) peel the lace off while the paint is still wet and hang to dry

…and hey presto! Ready to wrap some fantastic gifts!

Sydney Summer Sun

This weekends weather was too good to miss. My sister-in-law just jetted in from New York so we lapped up a swim, read by the lake and ate fish and chips at sunset... No crafting this weekend so I'll be catching up tomorrow night! 19 days ‘til Christmas!

Ok, so I’m starting to get a little obsessive with my studio space and I’m burring myself in lots of projects. On the weekend :

- I padded out my dressmaking dummy to the correct size (to ensure perfect pattern fit every time!)
- finished my first “block” pattern to create a template for my own designs
- started this simplicity pattern (using white lace)
- Finished another Christmas garland for the house.

The paper garland only took me about 1 hour to make. The paper is from spotlight (currently on sale for VIP members) and I used a Lincraft hole punch.
To make:
- punch out 3 circles of contrasting paper (I did 31 x 3 circles for my garland)
- stack 3 circles on top of each other
- pull 10 cm’s of thread through the machine before you start to sew
- sew a straight stitch right through the centre of the 3 stacked circles then keep machine sewing with no paper for a couple of stitches, then feed another 3 circles through and stitch again down the centre. Repeat until all circles are sewn.
- Leave another 10cm’s of thread at the end for tying.

Great Christmas project for those of us running short on time!

I heart the Finders Keepers market

I’ve got the biggest Market crush ever!!!

The Finders Keepers is well worth the visit. I bought stacks of handmade Christmas presents and picked up plenty of inspiration to fuel me for the next 100 weekends.

It’s on tomorrow (Sat 4th December) in Sydney – FINAL date for the year!!!

One organised studio = one super quick DIY skirt!

I love the floral skirts that are gracing the pages of fashion mags this season so I thought I’d make my own!

This skirt was made in 3 hours. I found the fabric at Lindcraft for $14 per metre and I only needed about 80cm. Essentially, it’s just a rectangle with shirring for the waistband with a tie!

Supplies:
Material (my fabric was 145cm wide so I only needed just under a metre)
Shirring elastic
Lightweight interfacing
Cotton

Simple steps

1) Measure the size of your waist and double it to get the fabric width you are going to use (I used an existing skirt to figure out my size)
2) I wanted a waist band that would sit up so I interfaced 10cm for the waist band
3) Wind the shirring elastic onto the bobbin
4) Shirr 4 rows of elastic where you want the waist to pull in
5) Sew up the back seam which should give you a circle and let your skirt take shape
6) Make a tie – mine was 6 cm wide. I gave the tie ends mitered edges and I finished with a top stitch.
7) Hem to desired length
FINITO!

DIY Christmas Decorations

With December just over a week away I thought I’d better get cracking on some Christmas decorations. Inspired by the origami I saw on a recent holiday to Japan, I thought I’d start by making a quick garland of 3D stars.

I trialled a few different types of paper and ribbon but found that the sheet of Cristina Re reversible paper I had lying around had the best paper weight to produce sharp points on the star.

This video taught me how to weave/fold a 3d star and I used strips of paper about 1.2cm wide by about 50cm long.

One sheet of Cristina Re paper made about 13 stars. Clear fishing line was used to string the stars together after puncturing a whole in each star with a sewing needle.

After practicing with a couple of stars, it only took about 5 minutes to make a star from cutting the strips to completing the last point.

If you like the stars but don’t want a garland then you could easily turn a single star into a tree bauble or use them to decorate gift wrapping.

How to combat post-holiday blues - make a dress!

I'm back from holidays and reality has certainly kicked into gear. The memories of our 6 week adventure have already given way to the mundane tasks of everyday life!

To combat my post-holiday blues I've thrown myself into sewing and anything crafty. This weekend I finished my first fashion project that didn't involve following a pattern!

I drafted the pattern (with the help of my sewing teacher Letty) from a picture I found of a Sportmax dress using a simple t-shirt template as the base. I had the silk and cotton lying around (fantastic to finally find a use from them!) and after a few mistakes and amendments... here it is! I think it turned out ok for a first attempt? Underground ARTMarket

I went to the opening of the Underground ARTmarket exhibition yesterday and was blown away with the quality of art work on show. The exhibition was buzzing as I checked out the amazing artwork from local painters, photographers and mixed media artists. I feel in love with so many pieces but with an overseas trip only days away I could only justify 1 early Christmas present (thanks, il mio) – a giraffe diorama by artist, Peta Morris.

The gallery did a great job at keeping the market vibe with tables as well as wall space displaying the artwork. I think this really helped to make the pieces feel accessible and probably contributed to the number of red dots on the wall!!!

This is only the second exhibition the gallery has launched and already it seems to be getting a strong following. My studio is next to the gallery space so many of the underground studio artists (except me, who didn’t finish anything in time!!!) were exhibiting with other local, emerging artists. The exhibition really says a lot about the artistic talent we have this side of the harbour bridge.

The exhibition is open until the 19^th September and I’d highly recommend anyone who can access the gallery to go and have a look!

World Trip - 14 days to go!

I'm only 14 days away from a 6 week holiday around the world.

It's been 5 years since we've been overseas so this holiday is long overdue. After a quick stop in Vancouver, we're heading to New York, London, Paris, Switzerland (Interlaken area), Milan, Kyoto and Tokyo. I've never been to the Canada, USA or Japan so a lot of this holiday will be a completely new experience.

I'm looking forward to discovering other crafters , sourcing places for inspiration, SHOPPING, finding flea markets and just taking time to chill-out.

If anyone has any "must-do's" for these cities please share! If anyone knows any interesting peeps who have shops, stalls etc. in any of the cities, pass on their details. I'd love to connect with them while i'm there....

Retail Therapy

The French really are the world leaders of retail packaging. From the moment you select your purchase, your item is handled with love and care. It's gently folded and wrapped with the finest tissue and placed in a sumptuous carry case. The whole experience is done in slow motion, almost like a retailers version of Tai Chi.

I was recently given some gorgeous things from Paris. Each one folded, wrapped and presented in the most divine carry bags. I scanned the above image to show you one of the bags. I love the colours and patterns. The ink painting is so beautiful it's almost worth framing!

While I'm talking about Paris + retail. 2 of the Parisian shops I can't wait to visit on my holiday in September are Cafe Angelina and home emporium 'Merci'. Cafe Angelina is filled with french pastries and macaroons and Merci is located in an old textiles factory with plenty of homeware eye candy.

I read about this trio a few months back and was very excited to see the article on them in Vogue Living July/August 2010. “Captains of Industry” is a retail space in urban Melbourne fusing the traditional skills of a tailor, cobbler and barber.

It’s the ultimate destination for bespoke suits, shoes and a short, back and sides. And if you aren’t too stunned by the uber cool interior, you can take a seat and enjoy a smooth coffee served just how you like it.

I genuinely wish I was a man so that I could engage the services of these talented men. I’d walk out putting James Bond’s suave style to shame.

DIY Wedding Flowers

Left bouquet includes roses & deciduous foliage, Right bouquet includes Alstromeria & roses

I love the thrill of a creative challenge so when a good friend asked me to do the flowers for her wedding I jumped at the opportunity. I knew that I would be getting in a little over my head as I have no experience in wedding flowers but thanks to You Tube I think I pulled it off.

The bride’s background is Burmese and Indian so the flowers needed to be rich with colour and match a white wedding dress, red sari, a blue bridesmaid’s dress and a burgundy groom’s tie.

We decided on the colour theme and organized a trip to the flower markets to do a trial.

Colour theme included gold, apricot, burgundy, aqua, peach, red

I kept the designs very simple to ensure no hiccups and the final bridal bouquet included: Cherry Brandy roses with deciduous foliage (not sure what it’s called).

The bridesmaid’s bouquet included: Cherry Brandy rose, David Austin rose & Alstromeria

The button holes included: Vanda Mokara Orchid or Rose, Camellia Foliage & Dodda vine.

It was a lot of fun putting together the arrangements and I learnt a few things about floristry in the process.

The wedding was last night and it was a truly beautiful event.

I'm very excited to announce my husband, Cade Turner's, FIRST solo exhibition entitled: Light + Colour + Movement.

This exhibition will be showcasing a series of unique Impressionist and abstract photographic artworks. Focusing less on the external reality which photography delivers, Cade explores the mystery contained within the raw elements of a scene – its light, colour and movement, using the camera more as an ‘Impressionist paintbrush’ to paint his photographic works with light.

Natural Easter Egg Dying

Use sheer stockings to stick leaves onto egg shells and rubber bands to create interesting patterns...

Don't forget your apron! Rubber bands can snap and cause stains!

If you blow out the eggs before dying they won't sink!

This post is a follow up from my blog the other day on natural egg dying. After a messy night, I managed to dye my eggs using 4 colours. Each colour was created from 1) Onion skins+tumeric powder 2) Coffee 3) red cabbage 4) Beetroot. To create some patters I used rubber bands, sheer stockings to stick down a leaf to some of the eggs and sediment from the chopped cabbage.

I wouldn't say the process was 100% successful. I thought I'd be cleaver and blow the eggs out before I coloured them (so we didn't have to eat boiled eggs for a week) not realising that this would prevent them from sinking into the coloured liquid! I also didn't realise that the colour would tear away from the egg if you touched the egg when it was wet. The coffee was a little weak (I used 3 coffee bags, but should have used about 5!) and the beetroot probably stained my clothes more than the eggs.

However, I had a lot of fun and look forward to using my eggs as a table display tomorrow.

Ok, so early last year I developed a slight obsession with the classic brogue. I hunted all over the shops, second hand stores and children’s departments to find a brogue that would fit however, with no brogues for women and a size 5.5 foot there were no brogues for this Cinderella.

Today my luck changed..... !!! ALDO footwear in Chatswood had just received a stunning women's brogue collection and I snapped up the above pair for only $79.95 (leather) !!

I love the suave style this shoe can bring to any outfit..... slightly masculine, yet uber cool (think Katharine Hepburn).

Easter eggs for the non-chocolate lover (yup, that's me!)

I could be wrong, but I don't think I'm the only human who dislikes chocoloate eggs. I know that some of you out there are thinking, "Freak!" but yes, non-chocolate eaters do exist!

To ensure I can still participate in the spirit of devouring an egg on Sunday, I've decided to try my hand at natural egg dying. Colouring an egg with natural dyes allows you to create some delicious colours and still be able to eat the end result.

Thanks to Whiteley Creek Homestead I now have some fantastic instructions on how to get started. I love the authors suggestions about using rubber bands and veggie sediment to create some interesting patterns.

Occasionally I discover a blogger who astounds me with their dedication to their blog. Marisa, from New Dress a Day is one of these unique individuals. With a goal to spend 365 days with NO traditional clothes shopping and only $365 to make 365 items of clothing out of recycled items purchased from flea markets, garage sales, vintage stores or thrift shops –her goal is definitely no easy feat!

What’s more, this blogger is insanely gifted with the sewing machine. Her blog is definitely worth a visit to check out her amazing creations. A budget of a $1 a day doesn’t exactly buy you cutting edge fashion, but Marisa waves her magic sewing wand and takes drab to fab!

I’m going to declare my vested interest in this blog up front - one of the exhibitors is my husband Cade who (by my own admission), is a very talented photographic artist!

Tantalizing Tights

A picture's worth a thousand words

I’m always amazed at the number of techniques that can be employed for a simple photograph. Even a little point and shoot camera can produce professional quality shots with a click of a button. The profile shot of me on this blog was taken on the base model, point and shoot Panasonic Lumix camera. I'm a complete novice when it comes to photography so I've set myself on a quest to find inspiration for a few basic techniques.

Solve Sundsbo

World renowned fashion photographer, Solve Sundsbo used interesting shadows to create these animal like prints on model Edita Vilkevicute. I'm now on the hunt for some funky shadows to try!!

A slight movement of the lens probably created the gorgeous “raining fire” chandelier display of lights in this photograph. This image looks so magical.

I love the look of a blurred background with a sharp detail in front. This was probably created by using a slightly slower shutter speed when the train went past. If the train was further away the effect could have been created by increasing the aperture size as well as slowing the speed.

Summer holidays are ....

I love summer holidays. Nothing beats warm water, sun kissed skin, yummy fruits and total relaxation. It’s like a good chocolate; it fills you with enjoyment as you savor it for as long as possible. My husband and I do the same road trip every year…. Camping in Byron Bay, then a luxury apartment in Noosa by the water… this is thinking time for both of us. We spend hours talking about the future and our projects for the coming year. I’ve already spent time thinking about this blog and I have some exciting ideas for 2010.

I also wanted to ask for your input – what do you like, what you want to see, ask me any questions. I’d also love to make my Friday limelight a weekly feature so if you know of any talented minxes who own their own design store, or make their own product or who are just insanely creative please dob them in and I’ll line them up for an interview!

Luxe Christmas Crackers

I’m currently on the prowl for some Christmas decorating ideas for table settings. One “must have” item is the humble Christmas Cracker. Whilst I love the cheesy jokes, the little plastic toy inevitably ends up in the bin which is a complete waste and not good for the environment. So, I’ve decided to attempt making my own this year!

I found Mecca Cosmetica’s Limited Edition Lips Bon-Bon, which are a fabulous luxe version for lunch with the girls, however this year they are a little out of my price range at $26 each.

So I’m going to take some “inspiration” from the luxe Christmas cracker concept, head down to spotlight and buy some cardboard, snappers, ribbon and either use up some beautiful Japanese paper (that I’ve been saving for the “perfect occasion”) or I’m thinking of heading to the local Vinnies/Salvo’s (thrift shop) and sourcing some beautiful old silk scarves that could be used to cover the cracker and then double as a decorative scarf (for their handbag, headband or neck). I've got a budget of $10 per Cracker and I think I can do it!

To fill the crackers I’m going to grab a hot shade of nail polish (from somewhere like dotti or sporsgirl where you can pick them up for around $5-$8) and add one of the jokes from my dad’s collection (100% guaranteed to be cheesy!). If you wanted to spend a little more you could put in a perfume miniature but they cost about $20 each.

I’ve set this as a project for this weekend so I’ll post some photos when they’re completed!

Warm weather = party season, and thanks to the early arrival of Summer, my social calendar is already in full swing.

Limelight - Margaret McAteer (Screen Printer)

On a recent trip to Tasmania, I visited an artist run cooperative called Inka Gallery. I fell in love with many of the artworks in the store especially the amazing screenprints created by artist, Margaret McAteer. Margaret's use of bold colour, vintage images and tounge-in-cheek political humour really struck a cord with me so I'm very happy to be profiling her today.

How did you become interested in screen printing?
I grew up in Sydney and there were a lot of posters (mostly) screen printed, plastered over building and renovation sites in the CBD and these fascinated me.

What inspires your work?
People inspire my work and this leads me into politics. I have been interested in politics ever since I can remember.

How effective is art used as a tool to communicate a political or environmental messages?

Art can be very effective in communicating political views, this becomes obvious if you look at old posters from all over the world. If you add humour to it I find the artwork is more successful in getting its message across.
I am currently working on an exhibition using nursery rhymes, fairy tales and politics.

Do you have a favourite artwork?
I don’t have a favourite artwork but I like to collect books on posters , both present day and historical for inspiration. Historical advertising and political posters can be simple, bold and very clever.

Price Range?
It varies depending on how many prints are in the edition. I produce my political posters in small editions. The price ranges is $100 - $200.

Where can we purchase/see your work?
It is only available at the Inka gallery in Tasmania, and can be purchased through the gallery directly or via our website: www.inkagallery.org.au. Examples of mine and other artist artwork can be seen on Inka's website.

Do you have a favourite retail shop in Hobart ?
I don’t really have a favourite, I like Inka Gallery as it exposes me to many different art forms and artists, but I will also go into any jewellery shop.

I Love Colour

I love the happy feeling you get from a home splashed with a kaleidoscope of colour. This house was featured in Real Living (Christmas 2009) and I was very impressed by the bold use of colour especially in the kids rumpus room. I've always loved floor cushions and the use of gigantic floor cushions to make a low seated sofa is wonderful idea.

Daul a Beauty

I was perusing the November/December 09 issue of RUSH when I was blown away by a photo shoot with Singapore born model Daul Kim.

Daul Kim was definitely tapped on the head by the beauty wand when she was born. A stunning and engaging model with an ability to envelope the camera with her quirky charisma.

The photo shoot is a brilliant example of how magic can be created when a talented photographer, model and stylist work in harmony. Credit definitely needs to go to Beau Grealy (photography) and Stevie Dance (Fashion Editor).

The November/December issue of RUSH is still on the stands and I’d highly recommend grabbing a copy to view the full photo shoot with Daul Kim.

Limelight – Sanaz (Sanaz Designs)

I met Sanaz about 5 years ago and was immediately captivated by her vivacious personality.
Sanaz’s love of design and fashion has always been apparent so I was very excited when she made the jump and started her own label “Sanaz Designs”.

From humble beginnings as an accessory brand, Sanaz Designs has grown very quickly into a fully fledged fashion brand. Her range is sexy, comfortable and flattering and I am always greeted with lovely comments from complete strangers when I wear one of her designs.

I’ve worked in fashion for ten years and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I have always been passionate about fashion and can see the positive impact it can have on your self-esteem.

I have spent years styling people and helping them create feelings of amazement they didn’t even know they could feel about themselves through fashion.

So why did I start my own business you ask? Why not?! I can’t think of anything else that I could offer more passion and love toward. I now have the pleasure of creating beautiful pieces of fashion that transform women from the mundane into the new and exciting.

Fashion is fickle, how do you decide on a new range?
Fashion is fickle and I don’t always conform to all of it’s dos, don’ts, trends, or colours. I find my inspiration through women, life, love, culture and art. Then take the time to meticulously interpret what I hold to be beautiful and elegant, in the most practical and yet luxurious ways.

Fashion may be fickle, but beauty and elegance never fades.

What would you like your customers to gain from your designs?
I’d like my customers to gain a slice of seamlessly stitched elegance and beauty, which acts like a key unlocking their inner potential.

A piece of fashion they can treasure through the times like a dear friend who has shared with them many special moments, but has yet many more to come.

My hot pick for the summer has to be the Bella Dress….
If this dress could talk, everyone captivated by it would hear sexy, flirty, feminine and exotic sweet nothings gently wrapped up into warm air caressing their ears, brightening their eyes and leaving its image behind long after you’re gone.

What isn’t my favourite form of retail therapy?

I have to confess that I love retail therapy in all its forms. Fashion, shoes, jewellery, bags, accessories, cosmetics, décor and well even food. I am a consumer in every sense of the word, however I would rather buy one magnificently, beautiful, quality item of great grandeur than ten lesser quality items to the same value.

It goes with out saying that I love nothing more than fashion therapy! I particularly love pristine kept vintage, one off pieces, all things unique, individual, heart felt and of course items which are beautifully crafted with the utmost quality.…

I love treasure hunting and this for me is very therapeutic!

I have always been surrounded by handcrafts. My Nan’s impeccable needlework leaves most people in awe and my mum was a full time artist for most of my life.

It’s not a wonder I felt a strong connection with Lizzie Fortunato Jewels, a label run by USA twin sisters Elizabeth and Kathryn Fortunato. They produce beautiful accessories that are influenced by their grandmothers craft skills. Their accessories are incredibly unique and feature a range of embellishments and detailing that has a wholesome, handmade feel whilst screaming unique style.

Limelight - Toby and Dannielle Clutterbuck (Favourite Things)

Pittwater Road, Dee Why was the last place I thought I’d find a delightful retail store that would captivate my imagination. “Favourite Things Homewares Emporium” is a hidden gem behind the hustle and bustle of Dee Why’s busiest road. Operated by Dannielle and Toby Clutterbuck, the store is a beautiful fusion of handcrafts, homewares and a quaint café which is so beautifully styled you’ll never want to leave.

I’m happy to introduce you to Dannielle and Toby Clutterbuck:

Why did you decide to open Favourite Things?

We originally took over the secondhand furniture store which Dannielle’s parents had owned for a number of years. We knew from the start we wanted to make it our own and had some ideas of what we wanted to do but it has been a gradual evolution into what it is today. The most recent addition, the espresso bar was decided upon because it is something we both have always wanted and it really seemed like a perfect fit for the store. We have always believed that you must love what you are doing and our store is a reflection of this. To us it is the little store that could, with a lot of hard work, perseverance and against expectations we have created our dream.

What can people expect when they walk into your store?

The unexpected! We aim to offer a complete experience from gorgeous aromas to exciting displays to captivate your imagination and provide inspiration. We have customers who spend hours in the store chilling out with a coffee and delicious cupcake and browsing around hunting out something special for a gift for someone or pieces for their own home.

Young children to adults alike are delighted by our range of sweets and have a fantastic time choosing out which to have. Our focus is in products that are classic and not mainstream and that will continue to delight generations to come. We hear everyday that our store is a gorgeous little haven in the middle of Dee Why a place you can come and forget about everything for a little while and this is exemplified by our broad range of customers who keep coming back again and again.

Favourite item in-store?

Oh gosh, that is a tough one. It is hard to choose as we put great consideration to everything we choose for the shop, from the toast and cupcakes to the coffee and the gift cards to the homewares. If we don’t love it and think our customers will love it, it doesn't get to our store. Although it is a good thing we work so hard because rarely a day goes by that we don’t have a cupcake or sweet treat and we have been known to go to the store a ten at night to get sweets to have while we watch a DVD!

You're married, how do you manage being around each other at work and at home?

Well we have been working together full time for a few months now as Toby has just left his job to come and work in the shop. It does take some work and it was an adjustment at first but if you remember that you are a team and working for the same goals you find a way to make it work. We also have different areas of focus, Toby is currently focusing on expanding our online store, www.favouritethings.com.au and I’m (Dannielle) focusing on new product ranges and head turning displays in-store.

Any new products coming into store that you want to tell us about?

We have some fabulous Christmas decorations and gifts for the festive season this year, we love Christmas and so do our customers!

We also are very excited to have Walnut shoes for ladies, we have had lots of people asking for them and the company which originally only did children's shoes have listened to their customers brought them out for ladies too which we love. Favourite place for a lazy brunch?Well, we have two beaches we love to go to one close to our home which we ride to and another near our store in Dee Why. We grab a takeaway coffee and some toast and just sit and stare at the water, it is very relaxing and there is something very rejuvenating about it.

LOVE for LEGO

And I thought my husband was obsessed with Lego..... A couple of years back he reconstructed our kitchen plans with Lego. At first he was using blocks from his treasured Lego box until a friend told him about the virtual Lego programme http://designbyme.Lego.com/en-us/default.aspx. After a week he had built the entire renovation with Lego - very helpful, but a little obsessive. Obviously this designer shares a similar obsession and I love the end result.

DIY – Chunky Chain Heart Necklace

I came across this sexy gold necklace during my daily visit to Garance Doré’s über cool blog by the same name. Garance is an unbelievably talented French illustrator/photographer and all-round creative type with a penchant for fashion. Anyway, I’ve been obsessing over the necklace ever since I spotted it, so first thing Saturday I bought some supplies and made my own super sexy, chunky chain heart necklace!!!

If you’re interested in making one for yourself all you need is the following:

40-50cm of chunky gold chain (I found mine at Empire Beads in Surry Hills. They have an online store http://www.empirebeads.com.au/)
Heart pendant
2 jump rings
Hook clasp

Total time to make = 2 minutes
Total cost = $5

Instructions

Use a pair of wire cutters to trim the chain to size

Use pliers to attach jump ring and hook clasp to end of chain

Use another jump ring to attach the heart pendant

Ta-da! All finished in 2 minutes!!!

Limelight - Sarah Daley (Papalo Paperworks)

There’s something special about the art of paperwork. The combination of delicate papers and trimmings to create a piece of artwork that appeals to the young and old.

I discovered designer, Sarah Daley on my monthly visit to Manly Village School markets. Sarah's beautiful stall displaying an array of unique paperworks on vintage windows, tree branches and pegs caught this bowerbirds eye.

I’m excited to introduce you to Sarah and her business Papalo Paperworks:

“Papalo Paperworks” – what’s the story behind the name?
I knew I wanted to use ‘Paperworks’ somewhere behind the name to represent the details of paper craft technique. Papalo was just a name I came up with and liked and I thought it sounded fresh.

You’re a primary school teacher, how did this play a role with you starting the business?
I teach Kindergarten and have a lot of fun. As a teacher the job is definitely very busy, however the hours and lifestyle give me the extra time to get a little creative. Holidays are a gem! The children have also inspired me as many of my designs reflect this. I am really passionate about design and beautiful things and love the chance to spend a sunny day at the markets being inspired by others and talking to lovely people. I like to say giving a card is like giving someone a smile on paper!

What would you like people to gain from your creations?
I am not so sure but I do hope a little happiness, inspiration and an appreciation for detail and creativity.

Do you personally design and make the items in your collection?
All of my items I design and hand make myself using vintage wallpapers, old sheet music, ribbons and fabric.

What’s your current favourite design/piece in your collection?
Some of my favourites are the framed babushka dolls and rocking horses. These are popular gifts for baby nurseries or little ones bedrooms. My favourite card designs at the moment are the ‘doily bear’ and ‘ the musical heart’.

Price range of items?
Prices range from $3- for gift tags through to $40 for framed art. Cards are $4- each or 3 for $10. There will be lots of Christmas cards at the November 21st market!

Where can we find you?
At the moment I have a regular stall at the Manly Village School Markets on the 3rd Saturday of each month. I also stock at a gorgeous children’s boutique in Avalon called ‘I am Kids’ and the Avalon Toy Shop.

What can’t you live without?
What I can t live without……….. This is always a tricky one to define. I would definitely have to say my family and my partner Dylan, the outdoors, Sydney and time to create.

Today's obession

Ok, I admit that I am totally and utterly obsessed with vintage bird cages. What began as a small love affair with the humble birdcage has rapidly developed into a complete obsession. I’m in love with their ornate design built to complement the exotic birds that were intended to fill them.

At the moment I have a couple of problems that are getting in the way of my first birdcage purchase…. 1) my one bedroom unit sadly lacks the space to display such a grand object 2) My husband doesn’t exactly share my enthusiasm.

So, to satisfy my cravings for birdcages I’m drooling over images and thinking of all the wonderful ways to style and display them. Filled with flowers, candles or feathers or even just left empty as a statement piece. Simply devine!

9 weeks until Christmas - DIY Presents

How fast the year rolls by…with Christmas around the corner we only have 9 weeks to finalise our festive preparations. Every year I have the intention of completing my Christmas present list by the end of November. However, I love to make gifts for friends and family and I’m usually found gluing or sticking something together in the late hours of Christmas Eve.

I’ve decided to be more organized this year and I’m already looking for DIY present inspiration.

The first project I’m working on is the following faux Hermes key ring. The original key ring costs $AU 285.00 however thanks to Desiree Haigh Photography blog I’ve found the instructions to make it for $12!

To make the key ring you need to buy some leather (I found good leather via etsy http://tinyurl.com/yk77wd8), metal key ring and a hot glue gun.

Limelight – Takeshi Okada (Takessuy)

I met Japanese jewellery designer Takeshi at Glebe Markets in Sydney. I was immediately drawn to his delicate, feminine designs and the incredible detail in his work. I am very excited to profile him for Limelight:

1) You studied clothing design – why did you start working with accessories?

My friend introduced me to an American jeweller when I was living in New York, and one day she taught me a few techniques in making earrings. When I finished making my first earrings and took a look at them, it was then that I decided to go full-time into the world of costume jewellery.

I (also) love anything to do with women's clothing - including shoes and bags .... and i love go to shopping with my female friends ... and love seeing beautiful things in stores that are like seeing a dream. Especially I love looking into the glass jewellery cases in the stores because they are always sparkling and shinning bathed in the perfect lighting. It's always been jewellery that has excited me and has me absorbed.

2) You were born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. How has your culture influenced your designs?
Japanese culture has always influences the high quality and delicate detail in my work.

3) You’ve spent time in different cities around the world, how are Australian women different?
Outside of Tokyo, I have spent time living in Paris, New York and now Sydney. I have also been lucky to travel to many countries in Europe and Asia. Australian women are different to other places in their love of relaxed, sporty and natural wear. I think it is the natural beauty of Australia that surrounds them that has such a positive influence on their style.

4) What has inspired your current collection and what materials are you using?
My current collection is inspired by Fairy Tales - things like Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Cinderella .... but I'm live in Bondi Beach so it's also a fusion of sun and sea and diverse cultures, not forgetting an adorable splash of the femininity.

I use all natural materials - such as chrystophrase, aquamarine, blue sapphires, rubies, emeralds, natural pearls. All my findings are of the highest quality wires - 14k gold and sterling silver.

5) Price range of items?
Prices are very attractive at $30 each or two for $50, so that they are affordable to young ladies who look for elegance and fashion.

6) Where can we find you?
Surry Hills Market on 1st Saturday of the Month, and Glebe Markets each Saturday the rest of the Month. Also, available in-store at Sarah-Jane in Newtown.

7) Your favourite coffee shop?

I love to the coffee and food from Cafe Rolling Stones (67 Glebe Point Rd) opposite the Glebe Markets. The staff are super friendly, and best of all everything tastes great!

Sometimes you come across a piece of creativity that makes you stop.

I often trawl through blogs and websites trying to find something a little bit special, something that will leave me with a sense of admiration and inspiration. Rarely do you find a designer who has complete cut through so when I found Kate’s blog “Little Doodles” I thought it would be a crime not to share!

Kate’s blog, “Little Doodles” http://little-doodles.blogspot.com/ is an illustration diary of everyday events. She features a range of illustrations including posts entitled “what I wore today” which document in ink every detail of her daily ensembles.

Although, my favourite illustrations are her birds… “Sweetness” is the first word that pops to mind after seeing her designs. I can’t help but smile every time I look at them.

Is it just me or are old school bicycles popping up everywhere? In the last 2 weeks I’ve discovered shop windows, magazine articles and blog sites all featuring this eco friendly mode of transport.

I think the attention is well deserved. I’ve always been a lover of bike riding; the romanticism of riding a bike through a park or along the beach is enough to inspire even a couch potato to exercise.

Thanks to this love for the humble bicycle a number of high end fashion houses are making riding even more über cool.

The onset of hot weather spins me into a panic because my Summer wardrobe is rather sparse and I haven’t been to the gym in weeks. To help motivate my new fitness regime and give me some direction to fill the gaps in my wardrobe I found these little numbers…..

Hot, hot, hot. I love colour - this bold yellow top is to die for.....The flouncey sleeves give this outfit great movement.

I'm a sucker for anything girly and I couldn't pass the femininity of this dress.... the soft layers are beautiful to wear in the Summer heat

I've always loved the style of Chloe Sevigny and this outfit reminds me of her.... It appeals to my inner rockstar. I would love the body suit underneath a layered ruffle skirt teamed with killer heels for a night on the town

A straw hat is on my "to buy" list... an essential for the Australian sun and a quick fix for a bad hair day!

The September Issue

Vogue magazines CFO must be thanking the makers of “The September Issue” for a spike in sales in a time when consumers are favouring Kmart over High Street fashion!

I had a girl’s night out to watch this documentary feature film that follows the day-to-day adventures of American Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour as she runs a tornado through the world of fashion.

The start of the film hooked me in with high energy music (fantastic soundtrack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtqGoHouoE0), big fashion parades and high end glamour. Six-foot models stormed their way down the cat walk as Anne Wintour and her entourage looked on to scout the outfits for the upcoming season.

It’s apparent early on that Anna Wintour is a force to be reckoned with – her razor haircut and piercing glare reduce many of her staff to a mumbling mess and she makes Meryl Streep’s character in “The Devil Wears Prada” look like a pussy cat.

It’s thanks to Creative Director Grace Coddington that we find one person in the Vogue office capable of holding their ground with the infallible Wintour. Coddington is a creative genius and Wintour knows it. Without Coddington the movie would lack depth and a human element. Master Chef

In my experience the motivation to cook a tasty meal doesn’t always come from fresh ingredients or a delectable recipe. Instead, a meal can be born from a beautifully crafted inanimate object that gives you the confidence to create something special.

Take tonight for an example…. Pondering what to cook I was found staring blankly at an open fridge for minutes on end. I then opened and shut the pantry door about 10 times in the hope some yummy ingredients would jump out and cook themselves.

And then an “aha” moment. Perched on my kitchen bench was my new stone mortar and pestle. It’s cool grey tones and solid stone structure were too beautiful to overlook so a meal was born. Bruising Cardamom seeds with Turmeric, Cumin and Coriander I had the perfect base for a curry.

Everyday objects that make a big difference!

I was recently at the Young Blood designer Market at the Powerhouse Museum.

The market was part of the Sydney Design Week and has become an annual event for me due to the wonderful objects and innovation on display.

One of the stand-out stalls this year was a local business called “keep cup”. Coining the phrase Hot Coffee. Cool Planet this business is tackling the issue of disposable coffee cups and lids head on.

According to their website, even disposable paper cups are not recyclable so both the cup and the lid are a huge contributor to landfill issues around the globe.

Keep cup has been designed to help this problem by providing us with a reusable takeaway coffee cup that is suitable for any barista coffee machine.

A Stitch in Time

I find craft activities very therapeutic… Channeling creativity through your hands and out of your fingers tips in the hope that the end result will be a master piece.

I’ve been taking sewing lessons for 2 years with Letty La Rosa, a larger than life character who calls a spade a spade (watch out if you don’t do your home work!).

Why do we crave something sweet after a savory meal? I’m hunting around the house trying to find something for desert but the closest I’ve got is a Donna Hay cook book.

So, I’ve started thinking about how inspiring sweet treats can be. The thought of a pastel cupcake or a brightly coloured macaroon instantly puts a smile on my face.

Not only are their macaroons special but the interiors of their retail chains are amazing. The Champs Elysees store is fit for a queen with velvet drapes and Edwardian chairs.

Finding Nemo

Aloha from sunny Hamilton Island…. After 5 glorious days basking in sunshine and azure waters I’m now sitting at the airport about to head home. How sad it is to leave paradise especially when the weather is a fine 28 degrees and Sydney is freezing.

However not all is lost, the pristine waters of this magical place have inspired me to research today’s blog - designer aquariums.

Now my personal experience with aquariums has never gone beyond a lonely fish in a glass bowl so seeing the work of artistic aquarist Takashi Amano completely blew my mind!

Takashi Amano’s work has popularized the art of acquascaping, where you set up the aquariums to look as close to real and natural scenery.

He has opened a company called Aqua Design Amano where he introduced Japanese gardening concepts (similar to bonzai) into the aquascaping hobby. A form of art that changes your normal aquarium into an art of nature. He has an outlet in Australia http://www.adaaust.com.au/

Another unique aquarium concept that requires much less maintenance is the Ecosphere. A totally enclosed ecosystem requiring no maintenance - no feeding and no changing water!

Sunday Driver

I love a Sunday drive on a gloomy day. It’s very relaxing watching the rain fall on the window as it washes the scenery that speeds past.

So to make the most of today’s weather we drove to Bondi markets to collect my custom made ring from Zefyr Jewels (a stall at the markets).

I was so excited to finally pick up the ring after waiting with bated breather for 3 whole weeks while it was being made!

At the markets I also discovered Holly Chalmers and StudioOat.

Holly Chalmers is a lovely fashion designer who creates a wonderful range of women’s clothing. Her unique designers “inject a bit of the unexpected” by using unusual fabric combinations or incorporating a different design feature – “I enjoy creating clothes that make people look twice, and a sense of playfulness is important too. Fashion should be fun, a little bit cheeky but always flattering”.

Unfortunately Holly's website is a little outdated as she’s missing the range of fish tail skirts incorporating Japanese Kimono fabrics that are just too cute for words! You can see her full range at the Bondi Markets every Sunday. www.hollychalmers.com

Studio Oats is the brainchild of graphic designer Christopher Tcheng who wanted to bring together illustrations and graphics to create contemporary artwork.

His designs are beautiful and delicate so it’s hard to believe a man is responsible for the artwork. You really need to see his work in real life to appreciate the detail. http://www.studiooat.com.au/store/pages.php?pageid=2

After a hard days market shopping we headed over to McMahons Point for a bite to eat. We ended up at Piato Restaurant at 123 Blues Point Road. This hidden gem was the perfect location for an alfresco late-lunch with a lovely little awning protecting us from the rain. We did a bit of celebrity spotting with our waiter being none-other than “Carbo” from Packed to the Rafters (his mum and dad own the restaurant).

The food was lovely with a good range of Tapas and Pasta options for lunch (we had French Onion soup, Dips with woodfired bread and Penne Arrabiata).

I love their unique business cards - 3 different designs using iconic imagery that makes you smile. Each one with the words"live the moment" (so Mediterranean)

Coco Avant Chanel

The name alone conjures up images of style and beauty so the chance to discover where this insanely talented designer came from was too good to miss.

“Coco Avant Chanel” is a bio-movie following Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s life from a young orphan in provincial France to her beginnings as a couturier in high end Paris.

The casting for this film was flawless with French actress Audrey Tautou (Da Vinci Code, Amélie) playing the adult role of Coco.

My opinion is probably motivated by my inner designer wanting to bust out but I came out of the cinema walking on clouds. The story of Coco’s life leaves you with a sense of love and admiration for a woman who overcame adversity to conquer greatness.

Be warned that the movie is subtitled and you will want to learn French and book a trip to Paris after you walk out!
